The Mayan people are a group of Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica (the historical name of the region). They inhabit southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.
We started the workshop at the local food market of San Pedro la laguna, where we met Anita and the merchants that she knows and come to all her life buying from them, the ingredients. At one of the market stands, we made corn tortillas, and learned that there are 3 colours for tortillas – whit, red and black.
We bought the groceries and the ingredients back to Anita’s home and started cooking the meal. Anita’s kitchen is an outdoor kitchen overlooking Atitlan lake #kitchengoals!
Between the salt and pepper, she told us about life as a woman born in a small old fashioned village and about how she went to explore Guatemala city in her traditional Mayan clothes. She told us about her fight for equality and education, for her and others like her.
What a strong inspiring woman! Although the Mayan cuisine is not to my taste, this personal workshop is a great way to get an authentic experience and it left me once again reflecting about life.
